Abersoch
is a coastal resort about seven miles West
of Pwllheli on the A499. It has grown to
become one of the most important water sports
centers for both sailing and surfing. It
is extremely busy during the tourist season
.
There
is a choice of luxurious hotels campsites,
caravan sites and can cater for all from
the well heeled yachtsmen to the surfing
Backpacker. There are specialist shops from
Chandlers to surfing equipment, clothing
etc.
The
village sits on Cardigan bay on the A499,
with the beaches of Porth Fawr, Porth Bach
and Porth Ceiriad being sandy and South facing
safe beaches. The river mouth is a safe haven
with good mooring and tidal launching of
smaller craft with safe anchorage for larger
yachts in the bay.
The
village itself whilst extremely busy during
the holiday season is also busy during the
winter months with a great deal of educational
and cultural events- concerts, plays and
WEA lectures being held. The village hall
has been important in the cultural development
of the village. It was presented to the community
by the kindness of Sir William and Lady Winterbottom
in memory of their son Harold. It is managed
by a voluntary local committee and have facilities
for indoor sports - billiards, Badminton,
table tennis etc.
The
Primary school is in a timber building alongside
the hall. There is also Sarn Bach school,
about 3km along the road to Bwlchtocyn and
Cilan, the local primary school. This again
shows Abersoch's only relatively recent development
as a tourist mecca.
Abersoch
was once said to have been the most beautiful
of all Llyn's small fishing hamlets. The
village of Llanengan and its ancient church
was the center of the parish.
